Binge viewing:
The birth of bingeing
Fans of the DVD box set could argue "bingeing" started long before streaming was a thing — but nothing popularized the practice quite like Netflix's first season of House of Cards.
Premiering in February 2013, the then Kevin Spacey-led series marked Netflix's first foray into the world of original programming.
At the time of release, viewers were shocked to have the entire first season available all at once and indulged readily.
Demand for Netflix sevices shifts to the right:
By year's end, the show had earned Netflix millions of new subscribers and nine Emmy nominations.
House of Cards' success permanently changed the streaming service business model, and opened the door for hundreds of other shows we loved this decade.
Without House of Cards, there may have been no Stranger Things, no Orange is the New Black, and perhaps no Netflix.
